Psoriasis: Locations and Types

Psoriasis is a chronic dermatosis that can occur anywhere on the body. It can cause red, purple, or grayish scaly patches on the skin. Psoriasis can manifest in various forms and at different locations on the body.

In this article, we have listed some common locations and five types of psoriasis. Let us know about them in detail.

Locations

Genital Psoriasis

It occurs on or around the genital area of the person. It is the most common but is rarely discussed because people feel shy about discussing it with their doctor. It can affect the different genital areas of the person, including the vulva, penis, skin folds between the thigh and genital area, the skin fold between the buttocks, the inner and upper thigh, the scrotum, and the pubis.

Scalp Psoriasis

It can affect the hairline, the forehead, the back of your neck, behind or inside the ears, or even cover your entire scalp. The person may experience hair loss due to continuous scratching and harsh treatments. But it is only temporary until you get the right treatment for your scalp psoriasis. Some of its symptoms are dandruff-like flaking, silver or grayscale, dry scalp, itchiness, burning, and hair loss.

Facial Psoriasis

It can affect any area on the face, causing red and dry patches on it. The affected areas on the face may include the eyebrows, hairline, upper forehead, and the skin between the nose and the upper lip. The person may experience various symptoms including dryness and inflammation in the eyes, hearing loss when scaling builds up on the ear canal, white and gray lesions inside the mouth, etc.

Skin Folds

It can appear anywhere in the body where the skin folds, including under the arms, below the breasts, around the belly button, in the groin, etc. The inflammation and irritation increase due to continuous rubbing and sweating in the skin.

Hands, Feet, and Nails

This is also referred to as palmoplantar psoriasis (PP), in which the palms of the hands and soles of the feet get affected. The person may experience mobility issues and find it difficult to do daily tasks.

Types

Pustular Psoriasis: It is a rare type of psoriasis that causes small white or yellow blisters on the skin that are filled with pus. These pus-filled bumps are called pustules. These pustules come together to form a group and form a single large blister surrounded by red and scaly skin.

Plaque Psoriasis: It is one of the most common types and often develops on the scalp, knees, elbows, or torso. It appears as a plaque and patches on the skin causing itchiness, pain, and inflammation.

Guttate Psoriasis: It is one of the rarest types and can start at any age. It is different from other types of psoriasis in that it causes small, round, red, or discolored spots called papules. It can affect any area of the body including the arms, legs, and torso.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis: It is also a rare type of psoriasis that may affect the entire body. It is very aggressive and may be life-threatening when it becomes very serious. The symptoms include intense redness or discoloration of the skin, shedding of skin layers, inflammation, itching, pain, and change in body temperature.

Inverse Psoriasis: It affects 20–30% of people with psoriasis. It appears as red, purple, or brown lesions on the skin, depending on the skin type. It may affect different areas of the body including the armpits, groin, skin folds under the breasts, and other skin folds on the body. Visit icare4u for more information.
